Officially kicking off last month by highlighting the then lesser-known talents of Atlanta’s very own, R&B-infected: Ricardo Valentine, (otherwise known as 6LACK), Apple Music’s #UpNext feature has been steadily growing in popularity among listeners as it works to introduce them to a single new artist – every month.
The company described the exclusive video documentary series, at the time, as one centered on giving more background on music’s “next generation” – as Apple explained it would aim to profile the newest and most-notable entrants to the scene, and the service, as a whole.
And following Apple featuring Ricardo as its first, the Californian company is today announcing the second-ever artist to get the UpNext treatment …
Of course, it’s perhaps of little surprise to regular listeners of Beats 1 that Sigrid is taking the crown …
Serving as the service’s featured artist for the month of May, Sigrid Solbakk Raabe is a Ålesund-born and pop-laced singer-songwriter from Norway who has been making a name for herself ever since signing on with Island Records – last year.
There’s even an acoustic version.
But despite the single’s huge international success, and resulting global airplay, you might be surprised to learn that it was not her first.
That’s because, before signing on with Island at the back end of last year, Raabe had actually released three other singles on a solo basis: Sun, Two Fish and Known You Forever – under lesser known labels and record houses exclusive to Norway and Sweden. Sadly, those offerings are no longer available for download (at least on iTunes, anyway).
Going on to release her solo follow-up: Plot Twist under Island –the second from EP: Don’t Kill My Vibe– earlier last month, upon announcing that the artist would be serving as this month’s #UpNext feature on Thursday, the Apple Music Editors had just one thing to say to those yet to meet the riser:
“You need to hear this.”
