Publishing details of the patent filing over the the weekend, PatentlyApple claims that the Cupertino company could now be working to make the Cook-described “cultural phenomenon” that is AirPods … water resistant.
The next-gen AirPods case could include a “liquid-tight electrical connector,” the filing explains, which could have mounting flanges and “sealed features” to make it both resistant and impervious to liquid penetration.
As a bonus, this new design will reportedly also feature a new charging system:
“Apple is considering adding a secondary charging system to the AirPods case so that it could double as a portable wireless charging dock that could recharge other [iOS devices] on its outer surface,” the patent-watching publication reports.
It is not yet clear if or when the iteration of Apple’s AirPods as detailed in the above described patent will see the light of day … but the additions could be just enough to make those who purchased the product’s 1st generation to consider upgrading, especially as the new case will reportedly also carry the ability to recharge both iPhone or Apple Watch.
Maybe the new case will be sold separately? … Who knows.
