Facebook Testing “Secret Conversations” Feature for Messenger

Facebook has issued a whitepaper on a potential new feature it has begun testing, that could one day come to its official Messenger app.

“We are starting to test the ability to create one-to-one secret conversations in Messenger that will be end-to-end encrypted and which can only be read on one device of the person you’re communicating with,” the company announced.

Secret Conversations is a distinct conversation mode inside Facebook Messenger. Individual secret conversations are displayed as separate threads in Messenger and share many UX elements with regular Messenger conversations,” the paper says, as Facebook notes that its “Secret Conversations” feature –which has already begun testing, and could land on both iOS and Android devices in the near future– uses a different transport protocol, specialised on-device storage and a separate back-end infrastructure.

In an attempt to quell fears over security the whitepaper penned by the social network also outlines a specific “threat model,” which big blue says would be enacted in the event of compromised servers and networking infrastructure used by Messenger — and Facebook itself.

“Attempts to obtain message plaintext or falsify messages by Facebook or network providers result in explicit warnings to the user,” the firm says. “We assume however that clients are working as designed, e.g. that they are not infected with malware,” Facebook added as it explained the potential future messaging model.

The news comes as Apple’s iMessage user-base continues to grow, thanks in part to the Californian company choosing to use end-to-end encryption in order to protect (and prevent unauthorised access to) its users’ private conversations.
