Some admittedly sketchy-looking photos of an iPhone faceplate that appears to feature edge-to-edge glass, have surfaced this week. The images were first posted to micro-blogging service – Sina Weibo – and were later deleted.
Since then, Nowhereelse.fr has republished the photos that appear to show not only an off-center cut-out for the device’s home button, but also a visible ‘gap’ between the cut-out and the frontplate’s glass, suggesting that the photos themselves could have been digitally altered, or that they depict some very early prototypes for a display of this nature.
Various reports to surface back in 2011 and that centred on the theoretical design, and function, regarding future models of Apple’s iPhone also suggested the device could one day gain an edge-to-edge glass display. At that time, however, the technology to create such a display was thought to be at least a few years out.
Apple is currently expected to unveil the next-generation of its iPhone(s), this Fall.
