Arriving off the singer’s fourth studio album – “PRISM” – the track combines the trap, grime, and hip hop genres to bring listeners a southern rap-techno “mashup” that will be hard for most ears to put down.
Featuring rather ambiguous lyrics; “are you ready for the perfect storm?” … “cos’ what’s in mind there’s no going back,” the track was originally released in association with soft drinks giant, Pepsi, as fans were first given the exclusive ability to listen to unreleased snippets from the song, and then given the task of deciding on its early release by voting on Twitter.
Hitting the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after its public release, the song debuted at number 17 in the week ending October 5, 2013. It also debuted at number 4 on the ‘Hot Digital Songs’ chart with 194,000 downloads.
Now fast-forward to the week ending January 11, 2014, and “Dark Horse” sold a staggering 285,000 copies, reflecting a 158-percent jump from its previous ranking of number 7.
The following week the song rose to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 4 on the Digital Songs Chart selling 229,000 copies. “Dark Horse” has sold 1 Million copies in the U.S, as of January 9, 2014.
